Release

LowResArka

11

Jeanmilost 2020-02-22 21:08 (Edited)

This is a small Arkanoid portage for the LowResNX.

The game contains the 32 levels of the original version, and the final boss (20 hits are required to defeat him). The levels are arranged as close as possible as the original game, however there are notable differences because the original game allows until 15x15 blocks per level, whereas the current version allows only 6x5 blocks.

I certify that the game may be completed, even if some level are very difficult (see e.g the level 12). My personal play time was about 1h30 to complete the game, but I think that it may be completed in 1 hour.

There is no score in this version. I wanted to add a counter for points, but I couldn’t because I reached the number of tokens supported by the framework 😜 So I release the game as is.

I hope you’ll enjoy it 😎

Jeanmilost, Incredible work! The graphics, sound effects, and in particular the music, are very reminiscent (almost exactly like) the original Arkanoid game! If memory serves me correctly that game was done by TAITO? πŸ€” The same company that introduced us to Space Invaders, Bubble Bobble, Bionic Commando and dozens of other titles over the years. This looks like being an excellent conversion! πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘

Very well done! Just one thing:
I don’t remember if the original game had it, but do you plan to make dynamic angles? Now you cannot really affect the balls route.

Really nice game

Here is a version with Dynamix added... if you like it you are free to use it :D

Jeanmilost 2020-02-24 20:48 (Edited)

Thank you very much for all these positive returns :-) It is very encouraging, and turn me motivated to continue this development, even if at the beginning I just wanted to do a simple exercise before starting more personal projects (if time permits me).

@Roger Davis yes the game was originally developed by Taito, and ported on computers like the Amstrad CPC by Imagine, which is the version I retained as working model, due to its simplicity and excellent quality for a 8 bit adaptation.

@Timo you're right, there are dynamic angles on the arcade version, and I at least planned the possibility to add a such feature, as the used values for the offsets are floating points. But I need to checkout the arcade emulation to see how it all works :-D

@was8bit thank you for the Dynamix version, I'll try it as soon as possible.

Here is the math.... feel free to tweak as needed :)

DYNAMIX=BALLX-SPRITE.X(2)+4
OFFSETX=OFFSETX+DYNAMIX/12

Very cool, love tiny dots effects :)

.. the left paddle edge still misses though...

Jeanmilost 2020-03-03 23:59

@was8bit Thank you for the bug report, I'll check that as soon as possible
