Town is a nice addition...
... in the original dos version i dont think they had but the one first town, and none along the way....
You might consider changing town to woods, and give player an option to use 1 item to hunt or look for food and medicines etcs... in other words, player pays 1 item for chance of finding either nothing or some amount of more things (rnd amount of what your current town gives)
This would require some careful changes but would give the player options rather than just watching the game go by...
Also, rivers could yield 3events: nothing (50%), gain a few items(40%) fish water etc. and a stormy river which player looses 1/2 of their items (10%) to be closer to the original game,,, :)
I would advice one change at a time, to work out any issues first before tacking more changes...
So far though, as is, it is a fun game :)
