Although the new character based graphics system isn't the most suitable for plotting pixels or drawing boxes, with some decoding, and encoding it can still be done.

I went down this path too - check out my profile for some similar stuff.
Good news and bad news about the pixel-level algorithms: once you understand it, you really can do anything, but it takes *so* long.
