Each time you cannot beat the timer, you earn an X Strike
3 X strikes, and game ends
Even if you earn a strike, you MUST complete the round by selecting all correct matches before play can continue. Incorrect selections count against the matches.

I actually got the idea from work... where you have a tablet with checklists to submit that you have verified all steps and checks have been completed... pages and pages of different kinds of checks, values entered, more checks... it can get kinda confusing where you are at, and you have to fill 'em all out before you can say you're done... so you are motivated to complete 'em all as fast and efficiently as possible... ;)
