As you probably already know, you can access the audio registers of lowres NX at memory address $FF40.
The first stored data value is a 16-bit frequency value, which you can read and write!
Now I can add a pitch lever to my midi player

The internal frequency register is also used for the pitch LFOs, that's one reason why it has a higher "resolution".
