Link’s Awakening Intro

10

McPepic 2022-06-16 18:54 (Edited)

I saw the intro to the game and decided to try and recreate it.

Let me know what you think/how I did. :)

Edit 1:
Turned the rain into sprites, added foreground waves, made lightning stay on screen longer
Edit 2:
Modified ship sprite, adjusted frequency of boat and lightning, added thunder
Edit 3:
Changed foreground wave slightly and modified thunder
Edit 4:
Modified how lightning is drawn and layered waves in front of the ship

Can you use another background for the vertical motion of the close waves?

Vertical motion far from the camera (at the horizon) indicates pitching the camera up/down.

Vertical motion close to the camera (at the bottom of the screen) indicates the waves are moving up/down.

Maybe a sin pattern, where the amplitude of the waves is twice the amplitude used by the boat? (With a phase offset between the waves and boat, of course.)

This is really really good by the way

Cool!

@nathanielbabiak I'm already using background 0 for the rain. I could make the rain use sprites instead, freeing up the background for waves.

The update is amazing too!

Very cool 😎

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Fantastico!!!

pog!yes!

You nailed the lightning effects!
I think the thunder sound stops a bit unnaturally, I think it needs a little bit more "release" (on the synthesizer ADSR (envelope generator))

Instead of having a single layer of foreground waves, you could try to interlace two layers of waves

Very awesome... :)

... try adding another sound channel with deeper longer distant rumbling

McPepic 2022-06-20 22:42

@was8bit I appreciate the audio suggestion. Sound is definitely one of the things I struggle with in general.

was8bit 2022-06-21 01:37

I just keep tweaking, not only the sound editor but also the values you use with PLAY can effect things... if you use a small duration vs a longer one, can sometimes cause the same sound sound different ...

Also, I experiment loops to quickly slide the tone up or down... sometimes this too can alter the sounds...

was8bit 2022-06-21 01:38

What you have is already wonderful.... for me the rumbling sounds of distant thunder can be scarier than the single stroke... it makes me feel like the clouds are growling at me ;)

was8bit 2022-06-21 01:40

I have a relaxing scene I made that has crickets chirping.... it took me hours to get them just right ;)

I just discovered a sound that sounds like waves (you could repeat it a few times in like two voices)
