The best way is to use BG cells for the levels. In the original ZEL you checked pixels of the background, here you can check the cells. You will have less "resolution" for the level maps (a cell is 8x8 pixels, while in the original game you could check every single pixel), but you can make it up by making levels with several screens or even scrolling.
