The root of it is simple trigonometry ....
X.pos = radius * cos(angle)
Y.pos = radius * sin(angle)
.... plus a TON of tweaks ;)

I got the idea by watching water drain out of a huge sink with a large drain hole... looking straight down you can see a whirlpool effect with empty space the size of the 2 inch hole, and the debris and soap bubbles swirling around and around for about 3 minutes... the closer to the center, the faster they swirled around ;)
