Or..... perhaps design an imaginary planet with different life form types... player starts as one of the types...

Maybe like:
1) Frogs who love in marshes (but can jump limited distances)
2) Moles who live in the dirt (but can swim limited distances)
3) Fish who live in water (but can fly limited distances)
4) Vultures who live in the trees (but can dive a limited distance into water)
