Personal project that has been a long time coming but I think it's finally ready to show. I haven't done much balancing of the combat and progression, and it's my first time really using the sound editor, so criticism is accepted. And like with all of my projects, go ahead and use any or all of my code and assets, and if you can improve on my graphics and sounds then be my guest.
Updates:
02
Girl collects gold
Enemies are faster
Fail when kids leave left of screen
Enemies have varied heads
03
Added knock back to enemy attack
Hold down for 1/4 second to drop boy
Some balancing

Looks, sounds, and plays great :)

Tinycloud778 2020-01-22 20:52

This plays amazing

Timo 2020-01-22 21:07

Wow! I will play more soon and give some feedback :)

TrashCan Games 2020-01-23 04:09

This is a good game but..
It pretty glitchy still very fun and good

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-23 15:10

Thank you all so much for the feedback! A couple of things I wanted your thoughts on. I have a gameplay mechanic involving the baby boy, where you move faster if you aren't holding him, but nothing for the girl. She just sort of follows you. I wanted some kind of gameplay mechanic to be affected whether she followed you or not. Also you might have noticed that the enemies don't hurt you, they just hold you still and you need to attack to escape. The hero character changes his face when held, but I don't think I showed what is happening/what to do very well and wanted to know a better way to show the player that this is what is happening.

Timo 2020-01-23 15:51

Currently it's not really clear what the challenge is. You can just repeat pressing the attack button and the game plays alone.

Jonnywhateva, regarding a possible gameplay mechanic for the girl, . . Could she perhaps collect certain items within the game? 🤔 As she does this, and her load becomes "heavier", she would slow down - wouldn't be able to keep up . . Unless she offloads the items to someone else, at which point she would start again and be able to keep up with the group? The 'weight' points for her would return to zero. Just a suggestion. 😊👍

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-24 01:39

I do see how there isn't a real defined challenge, maybe some variability in the enemy behaviors might fix that, or a deeper combat system with more options than just attack. And I like the idea of the girl collecting items. Currently the only "item" is the gold dropped by enemies, but maybe I could add something else as well. Even having her collect the gold and then having the hero collect the gold from her sounds like it could add some meaningful gameplay to the girl. Thank you for the suggestion.

Here’s some feedback on the game

1. The game can be beaten in seconds

2. You can pass zombies by jumping

3. Shop prices are too high even after my first play through where I took like 10 minutes to complete it i was never able to buy anything

4. When you catch up with the girl sometimes her partial effects keep on going

Hope you can improve the game

Timo 2020-01-24 06:25

I think the first step would be to make the fights more challenging. Maybe give the zombies (?) a real attack which you have to avoid or block. More beat’em up like.

Sorry for the critics, but this game looks very cool so now we want more ;)

Timo 2020-01-24 09:17

Actually I just understood better what I have to do in this game... Gotta play more :)

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-24 11:44 (Edited)

Sorry if parts of the game can be confusing. Like how the shop prices are astronomically high, and how the enemies don't actually attack, they just try to take the kids. I can change these things for the sake of gameplay, but my original idea was a metaphorical game for some real experiences I am currently going through.. if that sheds some light on the design decisions I made. Criticism is still welcome though and I have been working on one suggestion already to make the girl collect gold for you, but it slows her down.
Ps. You are able to select any item in the shop without having enough gold for it and the shop keeper will add the cost to your debt, maybe that wasn't explained well enough, but it's another design decision inspired by life

TrashCan Games 2020-01-24 12:20

I think what would make the game more challenging and fun would be you have to take the kid or get a bad ending and zombies don’t make you drop the kid they just take the kid and leave forcing the player to get the zombie also maybe making the zombie a bit faster and knock back from getting hit.

This is just what I think would be good maybe your vision for the game is different I dunno

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-24 15:31

I like those suggestions, I liked how the knock back looked in a previous game that I uploaded and that could work here. Also you get a bad ending for either of the kids exiting the right side of the screen (example if the enemies take them) but I neglected to do the same for the left side of the screen, which I will most likely also add in.. this is why play testing is good lol. It never crossed my mind that someone would just not pick up the baby boy
Also, not sure if anyone has found all three endings, I initially planned 5 but never got around to two of them.

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-25 04:34

Let me know what you guys think of the new adjustments to the game. If anything doesn't seem to fit it can be taken out, and if anyone has ideas for a deeper or more challenging combat system also let me know! Thanks for the feedback!

TrashCan Games 2020-01-25 10:49

Nice improvements but often I find Jed floating the air

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-25 10:55

Haha yes, I know what's causing that too. I'll make sure to fix it for the next version I upload

Timo 2020-01-25 14:37

I wanted to say something about the music: The first time I heard it was directly in the Sound Composer. There it seemed a bit monotonous to me, but then I heard it in the game and it fits really well. A repeating song in a game can become annoying quite fast, but this works just well as it's not trying to get too much attention.

Jonnywhateva 2020-01-25 16:55

Thank you for mentioning the music. Honestly it's my first attempt at using the sound composer and originally was meant to just be a placeholder. I'm not very musically inclined, so if anyone with a talent for writing music wants to write something or even give me some pointers on writing chip tunes I would love to hear it
