The background you make is actually just a storage device, allowing you to predesign layouts... you have great flexibility as to how you wish to use it...
You get to choose a portion, or all, of your stored work and place a copy of it onto either BG 0 or BG 1.... using BG COPY command properly... will copy some of your stored design onto the screen ...
... also, if you wish to create an interactive background in memory, that is an extra step and allows you to save changes made in your background... say pickups, or other things that get removed, or even added...

BG COPY 0,0,20,16 TO 0,0
This copies an area of 20x16 cells to the current background.
I just noticed that the manual isn’t very clear about this important command. Will improve it.
